Chennai, November 16:
Hindu Munnani founder Ramagopalan demanded a separate department for protection and development of cow population in India.
Speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of nationwide Viswamangala Gomatha Grama Yatra, which reaches the state on Friday next, Ramagopalan said, “Time has come to set up a dedicated department for protection and development on cows on the lines of fisheries and wild animals.”
When our country has stringent legal set-ups to protect even wild animals like lion and tiger, why the government still hesitating to bring a dedicated department to protect cow, which is regarded as sacred animal among majority Hindus, Ramagopalan questioned.
He also came down heavily on illicit transport of cows to neighbouring Kerala from Tamil Nadu.
“There are reports of several illicit transports of cows to different states from in Tamil Nadu, and particularly, more than 3,000 hapless cows were herded in trucks everyday and lands in the neighbouring state’s slaughter houses,” Ramagopalan said.
He further said: “During the time of independence, India had 75 species of cows, but it has now dwindled to just 35 spices. On the other hand, there were only 300-odd slaughter houses during those days, but it has now climbed to massive 3000 and above in numbers.”
Blaming both the public and the government for the decline of native cow spices, Ramagopalan said, “Had the people protested illicit transportation of cows then, we would have save many more sacred spices by now.”
He also charged that the organisations vested with the power for protections of cattle, particularly cow, are toothless and believing in their action would only add to the miseries. Hence, the country needs a dedicated department for cow’s protection and development, Ramagopalan said.
Besides, Hindu Munnani also demanded that the centre should declare cow as the national animal, as the designation would help to protect them.
