CHENNAI: Hours after the Express story appeared on land mafia swallowing government land within the Ramapuram Panchayat limit, the Tiruvallur district administration on Wednesday sent a team of officials backed by heavy machinery and retrieved all 40 cents of land from the land sharks. The district administration is also intending to send encroachment notices to several families now living on the other 40 cents of land that slipped from the government’s hands years ago.
Under instructions from Tiruvallur District Collector V Palanikumar, a team of revenue inspectors and Village Administrative Officers led by Ambattur Tahsildar S Ramachandran visited the site on Tuesday morning and bulldozed down all compound walls erected by the ‘recent buyer.’

“We have demolished the enitre construction on the 40- cent land and as per the locals’ wish the area will be soon converted into a public park,” Ramachandran told Express.
Thanking Express for helping locals to retrieve government land for general use, K Ramesh said, “We the locals are thankful to the newspaper which highlighted the brazen act of land mafias and forced the government to retrieve the land from them. In the Ramapuram Panchayat meetings, I have already demanded the setting up of a full-fledged public park in my ward and this reclaimed site will be ideal for it, Ravi said.
Several villagers whom Express contacted after the government’s action expressed happiness over the retrieval of the land and said that swift action of this kind would discourage land mafias from operating in Ramapuram Panchayat in the future.
