CHENNAI CORPORATION: Opposition Congress welcomes budget with reservation

Chennai, March 17:
Opposition Congress party on Wednesday welcomed the Chennai Corporation’s budget proposals for 2010-11, but expressed reservations about the timely execution.
Participating at the budget debate here at Ripon Building, Opposition Floor Leader Saidai P Ravi said, “Though the civic body announced several public as well students-oriented schemes in the 2010-11 budget, it remains to seen how they execute it and when.”
Expressing apprehension over the delay in executing such welfare schemes by the ruling DMK, Ravi said, “Most of the welfare schemes that were announced last year were only launched at the fag end of the year (February 2010) and the same should not be repeated this year too since it would dent the civic body's good reputation.”
We would be happy if those important schemes are launched within five to six month from now, Ravi said.
He also criticised the carry forwarding of a few schemes, which were never fully implemented. According to Ravi, schemes like source segregation of wastes and installation of automated parking meters were not fully executed.
Vouching for private participation in containing mosquito menace in the city, Ravi asked the Mayor to explore the possibility to include private companies to kill mosquitoes from city's criss-crossing canals.Though he criticised the DMK-led council for several other issues, Ravi welcomed the budget proposals as landmark and public oriented.
