CHENNAI: The DMK councillors on Tuesday attacked Thiruvotriyur Municipal Chairman R Jayaraman (CPI-M) and a Tamil daily’s reporter with a water bottle during the budget session here on Tuesday.

Besides B Tamilarasan, DMK member from Ward-3, who attacked the chairman, his two other colleagues, K P Chokkalingham (Ward-7) relative of State Fisheries Minister K P P Samy, and T Suryaraj (Ward-17), tried to attack another CPI-M councillor Nagarajan with a water bottle. Unfortunately it missed the target and landed on a vernacular daily reporter’s face.

From the beginning, the session was stormy as the DMK members continued their tirade against the chairman for his recent road show where he spoke about the alleged corrupt practices of the ruling party, which eventually eroded the public’s faith in the civic body.

Tense moments prevailed for a few minutes inside the House when Nagarajan tried to defend Jayaraman, but the DMK councillors intimidated him with unparliamentary words and forced him to resume his seat.

It all started a fortnight ago when Jayaraman and his party organised a road show in different parts of Thiruvotriyur to highlight the plight of the civic body and the reasons behind the worsening condition.

Irked over this, DMK members cornered him at the council meeting on Tuesday and sought an explanation.

Even as the Chairman tried to give a reply in the Council, DMK councillors prevented Jayaraman and demanded his resignation.

Condemning the DMK councillors unruly behaviour inside the House, R Adilakshmi, a Congress Councillor (Ward-42), said, “It is indeed a bad precedence set by DMK councillors inside the esteemed house and the attack on the chairman should be construed as an attack on democratic values.” Besides firing a salvo against the chairman, many DMK councillors not only humiliated him, but also threatened him to attack if he visited their wards.

Annoyed over the delay in taking up the agenda for today’s meeting and the DMK councillors’ continued tirade against the chairman, AIADMK councillors staged a walkout.

Later in the evening, CPI-M members staged a road roko on Thiruvotriyur High Road seeking immediate action against the unruly councillors. When reports last came in, DMK councillor were staging a sit-in protest seeking apology from the chairman for maligning DMK councillors.

FOLLOW UP: Council adjourned with out any transaction

With the brazen attack on the Chairman of the municipality R Jayaraman and another CPIM councillor by DMK councillors snowballed into a big political crisis in Thiruvotriyur, the budget session, which has begun by 4 pm on Tuesday, was finally adjourned sine die after five hours without discussing even a single transaction.
