CHENNAI: Continuing the tradition of rewriting records year after year, the Chennai School students have secured a pass percentage of 86.3 in the SSLC state board examination results, (Class X) bettering their last year’s percentage of 85.3. Besides, a Chennai school student who was the topper in the civic body-run schools with 493 marks, missed the State first rank (496 marks) by a small margin of three marks.
Speaking to reporters at Ripon Building after congratulating the toppers of Chennai schools, Mayor M Subramanian said, “Our schools are bettering their public examination results year after year and this year, it has been improved by one more per cent.” Incidentally, the pass percentage secured by the Chennai schools was higher than the overall pass percentage of the State (85.3) this year.
While Chennai schools had a pass percentage of just 55 in 2001, they have tremendously improved their quality of education in the past decade and secured a pass percentage of 86.3 this year.
A Radhika of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Pulla Reddy Avenue, topped among the 8,885 students, who appeared in the public examination in March, with 493 marks.

The number of students who had secured centums in subjects has also increased to 81 from 18 last year.
Challenging elite private schools in the city with their consistent performance, this year, four civic body-run schools have secured centum results. Mayor M Subramanian handed over prize money of Rs one lakh to each school for achieving the feat. Chennai High School, Seven Wells, Chennai High School, V P Koil Street, Chennai High School, Vanniya Teynampet, and Chennai High School, K P Street, were the schools that had registered centum results this year.
