CHENNAI: After registering a record collection of property tax as well as professional tax last year, Corporation’s Revenue Department is again set to surpass its target for 2010-11. It has already collected about 73 per cent of its target and officials hope to better their record.
According to sources, the civic body collected about Rs 265 crore in property tax till January first week, against the targeted Rs 360 crore. In the professional tax segment, about Rs 99 crore was collected till December, against a target of Rs 135 crore for 2010-11.
With three months remaining, sources said the targets were likely to surpass by mid-March. With the average collection of Property Tax standing around Rs 1.5 crore per day, the target seems to be achievable.
More importantly, the civic body collects about Rs 50 crore in March alone, when the year-end blues hit people.
In the last financial year (2009-10), for the first time in the history of the Corporation, the total collection of Property Tax and Profession Tax reached Rs 490 crore mark. About 11,000 taxpayers have an arrears of above Rs 1 lakh.
