As the monthly council meeting began in the evening, both the AIADMK and Congress members cornered the municipal chairman R Jayaraman and commissioner S Kalaiselvan for failing to rectify mounting civic issues like poor sanitation, poor drinking water supply, non-functioning of streetlights and the prevalence of widespread corruption among civic body officials in tendering process.
R Adilakshmi (Congress), ward 42 councillor, said, “Though the whole municipality was reeling under several civic problems starting from unhygienic streets to non-supply of drinking wat er, the civic body had constructed several overhead tanks without storing water for months.”
Holding the chairman and officials of the civic body responsible for the poor administration of the municipality, Adilakshmi set a two-day deadline to the officials to set things right in her ward or face the music from her ward voters.
Joining the Congress member in lambasting the dysfunctional municipality, M D Sekar (AIADMK) said, “Every opposition councillor is complaining about the poor state of affairs of the civic body, but official machinery as well as the CPM chairman are reluctant to take any concrete step to solve the civic problems, and it’s highly condemnable.”
K Kuppan, AIADMK leader in the House, demanded a detailed explanation from the chairman and commissioner on the issues raised by the members.
Though the chairman and commissioner replied in length, unconvinced AIADMK members staged a walkout. However, the council meet passed 73 resolutions at the end.
