CHENNAI: With the systematic incorporation of each and every detail from the to-be annexed 42 local bodies with the existing Chennai Corporation database has been completed, a preliminary report on how to demarcate the proposed wards in the Greater Chennai Corporation is getting its final shape.

According to Ripon Building sources, the digital maps carrying details on population of the areas and revenue source (income) for the civic body from the existing wards were completed and the mammoth task of reorganising and merger of wards were expected to take off in the next few days.

It may be noted that the existing Chennai Corporation with 174 sqkm has 155 wards with 10 zones. With the inclusion 42 adjacent local bodies, including nine municipalities and eight town panchayats, the proposed greater Chennai Corporation would be expanded to 426 sqkm, from Idayanchavadi village panchayat on the northern side to Uthandi village panchayat on the southern side.
Though the size of the greater Chennai would be increased by more than two times, the number of wards after reorganisation was estimated to be around 175 and the number of zones was set to increase to 18 from the existing 10 zones.

While the shape of a proposed new ward in the greater Chennai has been planned on the population figure (40,000 per ward), it was going to be an uphill task for officials to demarcate them as ruling party in both the existing and to be annexed local bodies tend to lose most of their wards. Besides, officials in the reorganising process also in a state of dilemma on how to number the new wards, either to organise on Assembly constituency basis or to start numbering the first ward from Idayanchavadi.
