G B Pant Hospital: an unreliable and unsafe destination for patients of these Islands
Staff Correspondent
Port Blair, Jan 04: People of these Islands are losing their faith from G B Pant Hospital, which is the lone hope for people of these far flung islands as the Hospital is continuously failing to diagnose diseases or aliments and provide proper treatment to patients.
As there are no other big or reputed private hospital in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, people have no other option than to visit G B Pant every time for getting treatment with a hope that atleast this time they will get proper treatment. People, specially the middle class and lower middle class, have to completely depend on this hospital willingly or unwillingly but the outcome is largely distrusting.
Attendants of the patients have alleged that the management of the G B Pant Hospital has virtually collapsed. Cleanliness is believed to be next to God, in hospital there should be special emphasis on cleanliness as ill and weak bodies are very much vulnerable to infection from germs. But it seems that cleanliness is an alien subject in G B Pant Hospital. The stinky, garbage littered campus, unclean toilets and bathrooms, unchanged bed-sheets and pillows, incessant foul smell of the dustbins show the seriousness of the hospital authority regarding sanitation and hygiene in and around the hospital.
Apart from the poor sanitation condition of the hospital, patients and their attendants have to suffer a lot due to many other reasons. Carelessness of a few Doctors and paramedical staffs in the hospital often proves fatal. Serious patients are referred from the PHCs and CHCs of far-flung areas and in G B Pant Hospital these patients are dumped for indefinite period without any investigation and diagnosis. They take several days for diagnosis and in the meantime, many patients expire or reached to incurable stage.
It is also learnt that the X-Ray and C. T. Scan and Ultra-Sonography technicians are very rude to the patients and they remain available in their rooms or chambers according to their own convenience. Both the out patients and inpatients, including the seriously ill, bed ridden patients have to wait for the technicians for hours and hours as the staffs allegedly take series of short and long breaks for their personal works during working hours.
As the Director of Health Service do not bother to see problems of patients and remain busy in his own world lower level staffs hardly fears about any action from the Director of Health Services. Many believe that the Health Department has seen several lows during the tenure of the present Director of Health Service.
Such is the condition of the G B Pant hospital and its staffs on which the people of these Islands are completely dependent. It is an appeal to the Administration to look into the matter to restore and maintain the services and facilities of the hospital for the sake of the people of these Islands.
