CHENNAI: Call it the Rahul Gandhi factor if you wish. With almost all political parties in the country scrambling to throw up a young leadership with an eye on the youth votes, the PMK could not be left behind.
Its choice: Chinnayya. For the PMK, party founder Dr S Ramadoss is Ayya and his son Anbumani the Chinnayya. Ample indication of the grooming was available at the Vanniyar Sangamorganised youth festival at Mamallapuram on Wednesday where all leaders urged the community not to rest till Chinnayya becomes the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Firebrand Vanniyar leader Kaduvetti J Guru and PMK MLA Velmurgan made the biggest pitch for Vanniyar rule in the State with Anbumani at the helm. This was the first time Chinnayya was projected as chief minister material. For, it was always Ayya who was the natural choice for leadership.

Ramadoss did his bit to push his son to the centrestage of Vanniyar politics by declining to hold the silver sword presented to him by the community youth to mark the resurgence of Vanniyars, asking them to hand it over to Anbumani instead.

The heir apparent, dressed in black trousers and yellow shirt, held the sword aloft amid cheers from the about two-lakh strong gathering on Mamallapuram sands. The Guru on stage roared, “For us warriors, power is life breath. To rule, we need to win. Once we do that, no one can stop a Vanniyan from becoming the Chief Minister.”
