There were a few tense moments during the two-hour-long council meeting, where the DMK councilors tried to attack their AIADMK counterparts for speaking about corruption in the municipality in public and with the media. Soon after the meeting began, AIADMK’s councilor M D Sekar, quoting an Express report, started arguing with the Municipal Commissioner S Kalaiselvan for supporting the DMK-led councilors’ vested interests and disastrous resolution to allow total privatisation in the civic body. But according to residents of Thiruvottiyur municipality, the only area in which it has enhanced efficiency is corruption. Privatised civic services like drinking water supply, maintenance of streetlights and garbage collection are extermely poor, moan residents. Yet, DMK councillors propose to bring in a new resolution at a council meet scheduled for Friday to privatise more services, which has got their goat. Of the 48 wards in Thiruvottiyur municipality, streetlights maintenance has been privatised in 13 wards. Garbage collection in 19 wards is being handled by private contractors. The municipality also privatised supply of drinking water by hiring eight private water tankers. The apathy has led to poor patronage from dock workers. Workers say the main hospital located inside the port premises and two outpatient units with dispensaries, at Rajaji Salai (diabetes centre) and inside Tondiarpet Housing Colony, are understaffed and have been facing shortage of medicines for the last several months. D Purushothaman, general secretary of the Transport and Dock Workers’ Union, says, “These three hospitals, which once catered to more than 20,000 working and retired port trust employees, are now in a bad shape due to official negligence... More than 30 persons were reportedly killed and several others injured in a fire that broke out in a cracker godown at Pallipattu in Thiruvallur district late on Friday. According to Fire and Rescue Service, the cracker shop was owned by Anandakumar and said to be one of the biggest in the whole locality. It was being run from a rice mill and people from nearby villages flocking it to buy crackers for Deepavali. There was a big crowd in the shop when the incident took place. The officers said the cause of the fire, which reportedly broke out in the evening, was yet to be ascertained. The bodies were charred beyond recognition, they added. The district police and fire service personnel are carrying out rescue operations. Death toll is expected to rise, a police official said.
