As a solution to the perennial problem, they have sought construction of two foot overbridges along the 3 km stretch. Pedestrians and school-going children from these areas literally run the risk of being hit by speeding vehicles while crossing the road near Collector Nagar junction and at DAV school junction. Ambattur Industrial Estate road, branching from Thirumangalam-Anna Nagar junction is one of the busiest in the area. Thousands of vehicles use the stretch almost round-the-clock to reach Ambattur or Avadi. According to CG sources, the exercise, which would be conducted at Chennai during these two days, would be attended by over 40 delegates from state pollution control boards, ports and oil handling agencies from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,Orissa and West Bengal. The exercise would include workshop/mock drill on various topics related to pollution response operations, followed by practical demonstration of pollution response operations at sea and shore line clean up. According to sources, the civic body had incorporated new byelaws into its Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, January this year to regulate promotion chances of its class-III staff having identical pay scales. Based on the byelaws, about 534 staff working as Assistants, Steno-Typist Gr II, Conservancy Supervisor, Computer-cum-Clerks, Assistant Cashier, Licence Inspector, Assistant Store Keeper and Asst-cum-Store Keeper were merged into one cadre owing to their identical pay scale. After Express carried a news item on delays in recovering the land encroached on September 24, the Collectorate had woken up and questioned  its taluk officials on the ‘delays.’ According to sources, based on the Express report, collector V Shobana had asked full details on the issue from S Abid Husain, Tahsildar of Mylapore-Triplicane taluk and instructed him to evict the encroachment without delay.
