Spot study to solve problems at Chennai port

CHENNAI: With a view to finding a solution to what plagues Chennai Port, a team of officials comprising top bureaucrats on Friday inspected the vulnerable points in north Chennai and made an on the spot assessment of the issues that required immediate attention.
According to sources, the high profile day long inspection by top officials was necessitated after the direction of the chief secretary, who sought a detailed report on how to get rid of the perennial congestion issue before the all important January 12 meeting. 
Besides Atulya Misra, chairman, Chennai Port Trust, Ashok Vardhan Shetty, principal secretary, municipal administration and water supply (MAWS), T Rajendran, commissioner of police, Prakash Kumar Behera, additional commissioner of customs along with Darez Ahamed, deputy commissioner of corporation (works) inspected the port gates and the problems of congestion of container traffic on the Ennore Expressway.
Sources said the team started its inspection from the War Memorial (gate number 10) and went through Rajaji Salai, Royapuram, via the West Madha Church Road reached gate number 2A of Chennai Port for an onthespot assessment of the trailer traffic.


The locals met the team and represented their difficulties to the CoP even as gate number 2A was in full operation. During the team's visit to gate number two, port trust Chairman Atulya explained the flow of traffic in the gate.
Then they proceeded to Tiruvotriyur to get an onthespot assessment of the 11acre parking land along the Ennore Expressway and discussed possible ways of using it as a container trailer parking yard. The team also visited gate number one to monitor traffic flow of container trailers. and also Chennai Container Terminal Limited (CCTL) premises.
