CHENNAI: Stung by the shoddy work of private conservancy firm Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF) in maintaining its four zones litter-free, the Chennai Corporation is now proposing a set of stringent conditions for its successor, who would be taking over from January 1, 2012.
Corporation sources said that, the proposal to add stringent conditions in the agreement, was to ensure an ‘expected result’ from Day One of the operation.Conditions like monetary penalty for failing to remove garbage within the prescribed timings, movement of compactor lorries beyond the permitted hours on main roads, poor street sweeping and for deploying inadequate men and machine for each ward would be included in the agreement to ensure ‘better services’.Besides, the cost per tonne of garbage to be removed by the private firm on a daily basis is likely to be revised. The civic body is now paying around Rs 750 for each tonne handled by NMF and the firm removes about 1,500 tonnes everyday from its four zones and dumps at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur yards. According to sources, the handling charges per tonne of garbage are likely to be revised between Rs 900 and Rs 1,000 for the new firm that would be roped in for the operations. An administrative sanction for the global tender from the State is likely in a week, sources said.
