The total population of A&N Islands is 379944 comprising 202330 male and 177614 females, said the Chief Secretary, Shri Shakti Sinha while releasing the provisional population totals of Census 2011 in respect of A&N Islands at the Secretariat yesterday in the presence of Ms. Archna Arora, Principal Secretary (Revenue) and Nodal Officer Census 2011 and Shri Abrahum Varickamackal, Director of Census Operation, A&N Islands.
Giving further details of the provisional population totals, the Chief Secretary informed that the decadal population growth is 23792 in absolute numbers. The decadal growth in population has shown an increase of 6.68 percent over the population of 2001. While the percentage of increase in the male population is 4.85, the growth in female population is 8.85 percent, the Chief Secretary added.
The population density has increased to 46 in 2011 from 43 in Census 2001. The sex ratio has increased to 878 in 2011 from 846 in Census 2001. The number of literates as reported in the provisional population is 293695 comprising of 164219 male literates and 129476 female literates. In terms of percentage, 86.27 percent of population is reported to be literate comprising of 90.11 percent males and 81.84 percent females. The overall literacy has shown an increase of 4.97 percent as compared to Census 2001, the Chief Secretary added
The population of age group 0-6 years is reported to be 39497 comprising of 20094 males and 19403 females. The sex ratio for the population in the age group 0-6 years has increased to 966 in 2011 as compared to 957 in Census 2001.
While the sex ratio in North & Middle Andaman and South Andaman Districts has increased to 925 and 874 respectively in 2011 from 884 and 824 of Census 2001; the sex ratio of Nicobars District has decreased to 778 in 2011 from 857 of Census 2001.
As reported in the Provisional Population Totals of A&N Islands, South Andaman District has reported 88.49 percent literates comprising of 91.91 percent males and 84.52 percent females followed by North & Middle Andaman District reporting 84.25 percent literates comprising of 88.72 percent males and 79.39 percent females. The Nicobars District is at the bottom with 77.50 percent literates comprising of 82.65 percent male literates and 70.70 percent female literates.
The child sex ratio in North & Middle Andaman District has remained constant to 977 in Census 2011. The child sex ratio in Nicobars District has increased to 961 in 2011 from 937 of Census 2001. Similarly, the child sex ratio of South Andaman District has increased to 961 in from 2011 949 of Census 2001.
The proportion of population in the age group 0-6 in totality has decreased to 10.4 percent in 2011 from 12.57 percent of Census 2001. While, the proportion of males in the age group 0-6 has decreased to 9.93 percent in 2011 from 11.86 percent of Census 2001, the decrease in case of females in 10.92 from 13.42 percent.
The Union Territory of A&N Islands has reported the sex ratio of persons in the age group 0-6 above the national average of 914. Similarly, the percentage of literacy, male and female literacy are reported to be above the national average of 74.04, 82.14 and 65.46 respectively.
The sex ratio is below 62 points of the national average of 940, as reported in provisional population totals. The percentage population of 0-6 years comprising of males and females are also below the respective figures at national level of 13.2, 13.3 and 12.93 respectively. The contribution of the population to the total population of the country is merely 0.03 percent.
