CHENNAI: The Corporation has invited donation of books to stock the 67 modern libraries inaugurated on Wednesday for students studying in high and higher secondary schools across the city.
Mayor M Subramanian told Express, “We have decided to accept books as donation for the libraries at civic body-run high and higher secondary schools from anyone, provided they meet the Education Department’s criteria.”The civic body has decided to stock 2,500 to 3,000 books at each of the libraries. The launch is the corporation’s attempt to match facilities at the private schools in the city that have a dedicated library and fixed library period for its students.
According to the Mayor, a separate library period of 45 minutes once in a week for students from sixth standard to class 12 in the civic body-run schools would also be introduced.The corporation has spent about Rs 1.25 crore to develop infrastructure facilities for these libraries and bought about 13,000 new books at a cost of `six lakh.
