CHENNAI: Hyderabad-based Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL), which has been selected to take over the conservancy operations, from Neel Metal Fanalca, in the three newly created zones of Chennai Corporation, is likely to begin its operations after Pongal.
Speaking to Express on Wednesday, Commissioner PWC Davidar said that representatives of REEL had been meeting officials of the civic body’s solid waste management (SWM) department  over the last few days. he added that the  transition of areas to REEL was currently being worked out.
In the last Council Meet, Chennai Corporation had given its nod to select REEL as successor of NMF to carry out conservancy operations in three newly created zones of Teynampet (zone IX), Kodambakkam (zone X) and Adyar (zone XIII).
“Work orders to REEL have been issued and they will begin their operations from the fourth week of January,” Davidar said.
As the NMF stands to cease its conservancy works by December 31, the civic body has planned to deploy its men and machinery at those wards, where NMF workers would be winding off, until REEL takes over.
Though REEL has been entrusted to maintain three zones initially, they will be taking over any one of the privatised zones and in a phased manner they would take over the other two zones from the civic body.
REEL representatives have been appraising the civic body officials about their micro-level planning on how to get into action in Chennai and corporation authorities are in the process of evaluating it for a better coordination.Out of the three zones to be covered by the private conservancy operator, Adyar has 13 wards, Teynampet 18 and Kodambakkam 16.
