A study on ‘Exploring the discrimination and caste-based violence aimed at Arunthathiyar children in schools’ conducted by AHRF and released on Monday has vindicated the community’s claim of being discriminated against at every level . The study had begun in February 2009 and was completed in March this year. Coordinator of AHRF R Karuppusamy said,“with the help of volunteers from different areas, we conducted the study at 24 villages selected from five districts--Coimbatore, Erode, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Tuticorin--and recorded testimonials of 666 Arunthathiyar students in the age group of 11-14 studying in government schools .” The focus of the study was to probe into th...

The cost of vegetables like onions, tomatoes, carrots, beans and green peas has dropped significantly thanks to incessant rains, which have given the growers a sense of optimism. V R Soundararajan, a member of the Koyambedu Market Management Committee, said unexpected rains in the southern states for the past few weeks have helped the vegetable growers to get a good harvest this time around . On Thursday, carrots were being sold at Rs 28, beans at Rs 25, green peas at Rs 78, drumsticks at Rs 28 and onions at Rs 13 per kg at Koyembdu market, he said. From September last, the civic body has switched over to CFL lamps. A senior official told Express that the corporation’s electricity bill would come down by Rs 4 crore in the coming months when pitched efforts would be made to use more CFL lamps and introduce energy-efficient measures. This is a welcome development considering the fact that the corporation spent Rs 20 crore towards electricity needs last year. Another factor that triggered power conservation is that the corporaton has saved more than Rs 3 lakh from April to July end just by removing 1000-odd incandescent lamps from its offices. Introduction of 60 energy savers in streetlights helped to save another Rs 8 lakh during the same period. Agitating students checked motorists and pedestrians from using the road. On Beach Road, the students booed and abused an elderly woman who wanted to cross the road and take an autorickshaw to her home in Perambur. She was made to wait for two hours under the sun. The students prevented motorists from driving along the road. Some even chased the two-wheeler riders, forcing them to get down and push the vehicle to the other side of the road. By G Saravanan Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai, on Aug 18, 2010: CHENNAI: Ending the 13-month vacancy for the post of the Chennai Port Trust’s (CPT) permanent chairman , the Government of India on Tuesday appointed Atulya Misra, an IAS officer belonging to the Tamil Nadu cadre, to head the 130-year-old port often referred to as the ‘Gateway of South India.’ According to a release, Atulya Misra has been appointed for a period of five years. However, h is appointment to the post will be subject to the final outcome of the ongoing court case W P No 12259/09 in the Delhi High Court, the release stated . He has been serving as Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Transport Department since May 2009.
