CHENNAI: With the last date for setting up Tamil name-boards on shops ending on Monday, instead of starting its drive to remove non-Tamil boards, the Chennai Corporation has decided to extend the deadline for another week as City Mayor M Subramanian was abroad.

Upon the Mayor’s return on June 2, the civic body would decide on whether to launch a drive to remove signboards without the mandatory Tamil on it, a senior official told Express. Of the estimated 75, 000 shops and other establishments in the city, about 15,000 already had name-boards in Tamil and another 20,000 put up Tamil signboards during the last two months.

Meanwhile, some traders and Opposition Floor Leader Saidai P Ravi have appealed to the civic authorities to extend the deadline up to June 20.
