By G Saravanan Published on December 31: CHENNAI: With the Tamil Nadu government announcing its intention of expanding the boundaries of Chennai Corporation by assimilating adjacent local bodies, the civic body’s Council meet slated for Thursday is expected to formally set the ball rolling on the merger and reorganisation by tabling the government order (GO) on the subject at the meeting. According to sources, the government notification issued a few days ago would be placed at the Council meet for acceptance of by the councillors. Within the next few days, the civic body is expected to form a team of officials drawn from all departments with an IAS officer at its helm. CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized a huge cache of 440 kg of ketamine hydrochloride, popularly known as party drug, at Tuticorin Port, its largest ever capture of the contraband . Based on information that the banned drug was being smuggled out of the country in packages of salt and miscellaneous items via ports, the DRI increased its vigil at Tuticorin Port. On Thursday, DRI sleuths of the Chennai office intercepted an export consignment covered under two shipping bills consigned to Malaysia containing iodised salt, fried grams, rice flakes and other miscellaneous items. In total, 519 bags of iodised salt weighing 13 metric tonnes were billed. On examination, it was found that 22 of the 519 bags of iodised salt, though had exactly identical details including marks and printed description on the bags, were of slightly different external appearance. Chennai, December 24: Chennai Customs have seized a huge haul of pesticides worth Rs 3.5 crore illegally imported in six containers from China here on Thursday. Speaking to reporters after displaying the seized pesticides to media at Gateway Container Freight Station in North Chennai, C Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Seaport-Import), said, “On the basis of information that certain traders are attempting to smuggle pesticides and insecticides in the guise of chemicals, we intercepted six containers that were finally turned out to be a total misdeclaration of products and contained only pesticides instead of the declared chemicals .” For importing pesticides and insecticides, importers have to obtain licence from Central Insecticides Board, New Delhi, and it comes with severe conditions. According to the rules, seafarers need to get permission from the immigration officer to visit the shore and they have to return to the vessel by 11 pm . Addressing a seminar on ‘Security and the seafarer’ here, Ishwar Achanta, vice chairman of the Chennai and Ennore Port Steamer Agents Association, said, “Shore passes enabling seafarers to alight from ships to visit their families is a big issue among the seagoing community here and officials must weigh practical issues against the legislations introduced as security cover.”Achanta said the men should not be stopped from visiting their families by citing legal parameters. The military says it had not found the body of LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabakaran's daughter and so could not confirm the veracity of images circulating on some websites of a dead female body with gunshot wounds supposedly found in the north claiming to be that of Dwaraka, the Tiger leader’s daughter. Poor weather conditions resulted in the sinking of a mechanised fishing boat, off the Ennore and Palaverkadu stretch, that had set out from the Kasimedu fishing harbour with an eight-member crew. The crew was rescued. While traditional fishermen avoid venturing into the sea, mechanised fishing trawlers were also kept inside the harbour fearing gusty wind over sea for the fourth consecutive day. According to Chennai Corporation sources, the mandatory procedure for putting the historical structure on a postage stamp was initiated recently with a formal letter to the Chief Post Master General. A few months ago, a senior official of the postal department had indirectly asked the Chennai Corporation to explore the possibility of bringing out a stamp on heritage structures, such as Ripon Building. CHENNAI: With petrochemical major Reliance, originally supposed to supply CNG to the project, pulling out on grounds of feasibility, the environment-friendly CNG project would not take off even in the next 10 years, sources here have disclosed. Confirming to Express that the CNG project in the city has hit a roadblock, a senior State government official said that it was primarily due to the problem of assurance on sustained supply as well as the pricing mechanism for the gas to be supplied by the company to the State. One yardstick is the official mechanism the civic body has put in place to promote sports.For starters, Chennai Corporation does not have a dedicated department to promote sporting activity in the city. Sport is just part of the stadium department, which falls under the Parks and Playfields Department. The stadium department manages the 228 playgrounds of the corporation. By G Saravanan Chennai, December 04: Mariners’ Welfare Guild, a platform for marine organisations and professionals in South India, has planned a peaceful demonstration on Seafarers Day (celebrated nationwide on the first Saturday of December) against continuing criminalisation of mariners, near Chennai Port Trust. Speaking to Express, Capt S Pullat of the guild, said: “During the last decade there has been a tendency to criminalise mariners for accidents on the high seas to appease the public.”While criminalisation has now reached the Asian region also after Europe, many countries seem to be ignoring the international conventions they are signatories to, denying the rights of seafarers and not treating them fairly, lamented Capt Pullat. For example, mariners have been detained in Taiwan, Algeria and India for accidents that happened while on duty. December 01,2009: Amnesty International is calling on the Sri Lankan government to permanently release civilians who have been illegally detained in camps following the end of the civil war six months ago. “The authorities must make good on their declared intentions to free some 120,000 people and do so unconditionally,” said Yolanda Foster, Amnesty International’s expert on Sri Lanka. “ A permanent release from camps must be accompanied by assurances that people are not subjected to further questioning or re-arrest in new locations.” “It’s also critical that the government maintain its responsibility to care for displaced people wherever they choose to go.” The Sri Lankan government said today that families living in camps for the displaced in Vavuniya will be given a choice about whether to remain in camps, to seek alternative accommodations or attempt to return home. The port trust has never tried to understand the local peoples’ difficulties, as its container trailers fully occupy the expressway leaving hardly any space for other vehicles and public transports like MTC buses, the residents say.
