Liu Yang: China's first female astronaut

BEIJING: As a child, Liu Yang had her sights set on becoming a lawyer and once wished to be  a bus conductor, but decades later she is preparing to travel to space as China's first ever female astronaut.

It was a visit by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to her school in central China that changed young Liu's mind as she realised she wanted to become a pilot -- a decision that eventually saw her take on the historic role.
Liu was unveiled as China's first female astronaut on Friday, and is due to blast off to space later Saturday along with two other male colleagues aboard the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft, in China's most ambitious space mission yet. "From day one I have been told I am no different from the male astronauts," Liu, a trained pilot who is married but has no children, said in comments carried by state media.
Liu first joined the army in 1997, and has racked up 1,680 flying hours since then, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
She was recruited as a prospective astronaut in May 2010 before being confirmed as one of six candidates shortlisted for the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft mission three months ago.
"As a pilot, I flew in the sky. Now that I am an astronaut, I will fly in space. This flight will be much higher and further away," Liu -- a keen cook who likes to make "cola chicken wings" -- told reporters ahead of the launch.
China is the third country after the Soviet Union and United States to send a woman into space using its own technology. Liu will join two male colleagues, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang.
"As much as possible, I would like to experience the weightless environment of space, appreciate the beauty of Earth, to see our beautiful home," she told reporters.
"I will record my own feelings and experiences, and bring them back to share with everyone."
But as a child, Liu did not dream of the stars, and instead wanted to become "a lawyer like the ones in television series," according to Xinhua.
"The first time she sat on a bus with her mother, she also thought becoming a bus conductor would be great, as she could ride the bus every day," it said.
Decades later, she has become a national heroine, and her mission is being excitedly followed in the Chinese media and on the country's popular microblogs.
Banners have reportedly been put up at her former high school in central China's Henan province to celebrate her selection as the country's first female "taikonaut", as the country dubs its space travellers.
State broadcaster CCTV said Liu was selected for her "excellent skills and psychological qualities".
She was once praised for her cool handling of an incident when her jet hit a flock of pigeons, but she was still able to land the heavily damaged aircraft.
Liu is married with no children. State media has said that China requires female astronauts to be married and preferably have a child, due to concerns over potential exposure to radiation that could harm their fertility.
In a CCTV interview, she thanked her husband and said she felt "very guilty" that she had not been able to spend time with her family due to months of training that saw her rehearse for the mission 16 hours a day.
"He has been very supportive of me," Liu said. "I am very thankful to him."
She said she would discuss having children after her return from the mission.
"I love children and life. Being a housewife and spending time with the family is a type of happiness, but being an astronaut perhaps is another type of happiness that not everyone could have," she said, according to Xinhua.

A seafarer's story

Tamil writer KRA Narasaiah. Photo: R. Shivaji Rao
By Charukesi
K.R.A. Narasaiah, a Tamil, was born in Berhampore and speaks Telugu. He was a marine engineer who became a writer. His maiden short story was a starred one in Ananda Vikatan. Nephew of the famous writer Chitti Sundararajan, Narasaiah never imagined in his younger days that he would author celebrated books such as ‘Kadalodi,' ‘Madras Pattanam,' ‘Cambodia Ninaivugal,' ‘Aalavai' and recently ‘Lettered Dialogue' (in English).
“My inspiration is my brother, Prof. K.R. Krishnamurthy, who is an ardent admirer of Subramania Bharathi. He has also written a book, ‘Kanavil Kanda Bharathi.' He was influenced by my uncle, Chitti. At that time, I was hesitant about writing. That is why I wrote just two stories even for the hand-written magazine, Vinayaka, although I had a burning desire to write.
“While I was sailing on INS Vikrant, as a marine engineer along with 1,800 sailors, I began contributing in English to a cyclostyled magazine that was being circulated. I was a voracious reader and ‘Sinking of the Bismarck' and books on marine life fascinated me. I also loved to read Nicholas Monsarrat. When the ship arrived in (Mumbai) India in 1960, I had the chance to read Ananda Vikatan, which was introduced to me by a group of Tamil friends. It was an eye-opener. Jayakanthan was writing almost every week.
“The turning point came when I sailed on the ship, Govinda Jayanthi, in 1964. I wrote a 13-page short story and posted it to Ananda Vikatan from Rashbihari Avenue post office in Kolkata. Titled, ‘Theipirai,' it was set in Vietnam, describing the miserable life in Saigon. When I landed in Tuticorin about five weeks later, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a letter from the magazineVikatan stating that my maiden story had been accepted. It was published as ‘Muthirai Kathai.'”
There was no looking back as Narasaiah wrote about 100 short stories forVikatan and a dozen of them bore the stamp of ‘Muthirai Kathai.' He remembers one story in particular, based on a lecture by Swami Chinmayananda on the 13th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. Titled ‘Athu Mudivalla,' it spoke about death not being a solution or an end.
When Lakshmi Krishnamurthi, daughter of freedom fighter S. Sathyamurthy, toyed with the idea of starting a publishing company for quality Tamil books under the brand name, Vaachagar Vattam, Narasaiah participated in the discussion and it was on Lakshmi's suggestion that he wrote on a mariner's life. ‘Kadalodi,' the title, was suggested by Chitti and he became ‘Kadalodi' Narasaiah. Incidentally, ‘Kadalodi' is catalogued in the U.S. Library of Congress. While it was condensed in the Tamil digest Manjari, SAP in ‘Arasu Badhilgal' inKumudham cited it as a significant contribution to Tamil literature.
Vaachagar Vattam was the offshoot of Velli Vattam, Friday Circle, where intellectuals met and discussed various issues. It was a curious mix of people from all walks of life, musicians, academics, industrialists, writers and artists. Kalasagaram Rajagopal, who was working for S.V. Sahasranamam as art director for his stage plays, joined the group and did the cover designs of these books. (Artist and sculptor Kalasagaram Rajagopal, passed away recently in his late 90s).
Quality work
Outstanding works from Rajaji, Thi. Janakiraman, Chitti, La. Sa. Ramamirtham Sa. Kandasamy and others were published from Vaachagar Vattam.
Narasaiah recalls an incident, when Rajagopal sculpted the bust of the famous Tamil writer B.S. Ramaiah. He asked young Narasaiah who the sculpture looked like. Narasaiah retorted that Ramaiah looked exactly like the sculpture and everyone burst out laughing.
Narasaiah has met a host of popular Tamil writers such as Ku.Pa.Ra., Na. Pichamurthy, Salivahanan, Tiruloka Seetharam and Vallikannan, but his meeting with Va.Ra. was special. He met him in Chitti's AIR office, then on Montieth Road.
Narasaiah also remembers meeting Neelakanta Brahmachari, freedom fighter, on his train journey to Pune.
Narasaiah was also deeply interested in history. After being posted at the Visakhapatnam Port Trust as chief mechanical engineer, he was sailing to Maldives, Narasaiah met Sardar K.M. Paniker on the deck. He advised Narasaiah to write on theMaritime History of India. He began reading up on maritime history and when he was posted in the U.K., got the opportunity to visit the museum and utilised the leisure for gathering references.
After his retirement in August1991, Narasaiah was commissioned to prepare a compendium on the major ports of India, by the Indian Ports Association.
State Govt awards
For his books, Narasaiah has won awards from the Government of Tamil Nadu consecutively for three years, which is no mean achievement.
“I came in touch with Palaniappa Brothers, publishers, in 2002. They printed my books in Tamil and in 2006, my collection of short stories, ‘Sollonaap-peru,' won the award. The following year, it was ‘Kadal Vazhi Vanigam.' The Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department and the Fort St. George Museum were the sources for this book. In 2008, ‘Madras Pattanam' won the State Government's award for documenting the authentic history of the city.”
In 1991, Narasaiah left the National Institute of Port Management in Uthandi, Chennai, and was asked to take up the post of Director of Maritime Institute in Vanuatu Island. In the meantime, an offer from the World Bank came asking Narasaiah to join a mission to Cambodia for an Energy Rehabilitation Programme. Narasaiah was the only Asian in the five-member group that was assigned the job of rebuilding the port and dredging the River Tonlesap.
For his recent book, ‘Lettered Dialogue,' Narasaiah selected over 50 letters exchanged between writer Krithiga and Chitti out of over 500. When he met Chitti and Krithiga in 1992, they urged him to compile the letters with his commentary. In 2009, Meena Swaminathan, daughter of Krithiga, handed over all the letters to Narasaiah and requested him to bring out the book on the correspondence between the two intellectuals.
“It was a challenging task,” admits Narasaiah, “because it was very difficult to choose the letters and put together the selected portions in a readable form with comments, so that the lay reader could follow the thought process of these two stalwarts.”
Narasaiah was close to Thi. Janakiraman and Sujatha when they were in Delhi and continued to interact with them even after they left the Capital. Narasaiah regards Jayakanthan as one of his admirers and mentions that Jayakanthan had even named a character in his novel ‘Parisukku Po' as Narasaiah.
Narasaiah is currently doing research on Subramania Bharathi. Let's wait for a volume on the poet's life and literature presented in a refreshingly new angle.

Thanks to Thamizhan Mahesh, FB friend

District First டா…”

Reclaiming Palestinian destiny... By ISMAIL HANIYEH

As a new spirit of unity sweeps the Arab world, Palestine must also speak with one voice We as a people want to live in our homeland in freedom, dignity and democracy
PIC source: http://www.timesofummah.com
Some people think that the truth can be hidden with a little cover-up and decoration. But as time goes by, what is true is revealed, and what is fake fades away. This is what is happening in the Middle East today. Political reality returns, and all that is contingent — all that is not rooted in the history of the region's people whose civilisation dates back thousands of years — falls away.
As Palestinian Arabs inhabiting these ancient lands, our destiny dictated that we should become like a fruit overhanging a garden fence: each passer-by would try to pluck us, while we struggled to cling to the vine. But our right to our land and our nation is not a matter of discussion or debate: it is an inalienable right guaranteed by all norms and laws. The “Palestinian problem” has many dimensions, but at its root is Israel's occupation, which denies this inalienable right, and attempts to look for so-called “solutions” within its framework. Unfortunately, some of the major world powers provide it with political cover.
We as a people want to live in our homeland, the land of our ancestors, in freedom, dignity and democracy, and with a just peace that restores our rights. We do not want to attack anyone and do not accept anyone attacking us. As we have said on more than one occasion, the key to security is the end of occupation. As a people we have been historically wronged and subjected to dozens of massacres; tens of thousands of us have lost our children for no other reason than that we demand our rights as clearly stipulated under international laws.
I would like to reiterate on behalf of my people our sincere desire to live in security and stability, without wars and bloodshed; we hope that the world will help us in this venture. We extend our hand to all those who seek a just peace to work seriously to end the occupation and help us establish our state, which the world has already recognised.
We recognise that this requires a Palestinian unity that we seek to achieve. But external pressure has stood in the way, obstructing the path to political equality and national reconciliation. We believe that the absence of international recognition of the Palestinian democratic election of 2006, won by Hamas, has contributed to the current state of division, and to the creation of a weak Palestinian side that has fallen prey to accepting concessions on the rights of its people.
But today we stand again as a Palestinian people. Although under siege in the Gaza Strip, we have endured war and aggression, and withstood attempts to wipe us out without fading away. We are working hard in order to be able to address the world with one voice that represents the will of all our people, with an emphasis on the desire to live a free, decent and secure life.
We hope that this time we will be able to pass through the neck of the bottle and move on towards a genuine national reconciliation based on the formation of a coalition government that could prepare for free and transparent elections. And then the world must recognise the results of Palestinian democracy — particularly now, when the countries of the Arab spring are experiencing democratic transition, and a return to a lost authenticity that will not tear the region apart, but bring it together.
We do not want more blood. We want help in achieving justice for our people who lost their land and freedom decades ago, and in providing security for a region that has long endured oppression and suffering. This is a responsibility no one should evade. — © Guardian Newspapers Limited, 2012
