May 17 Movement appeals TN govt to declare Lanka as Genocidal State in Assembly

May 17 Movement, an organisation formed to voice support for Sri Lankan Tamils, on Tuesday appealed to the state government to pass a resolution in the forthcoming Assembly session declaring Sri Lanka as Genocidal State.
Speaking to reporter here, Thirumurugan, one of the organisers of the Movement, said, “The resolution in the state assembly categorically declaring the island nation was involved in genocide of innocent Tamils in the final phases of Eelam War would set the momentum to prosecute it in international courts.”
Explaining the Movement’s demand, Thirumurugan said, “Their own officials records substantiate our claim of genocide and everyone knows what had happened during the May near Mullivaikal where several thousands of innocent Tamils were butchered by the Lankan army.”
Citing a recent report, Thirumurugan said, “The then army chief and now a contender for the presidential post (Sarath Fonseka) had openly admitted that three top LTTE figures (Nadesan, Pulidevan and Ramesh) were shot and killed while they were surrendering to the Lankan forces. This revelation clearly proves that the army was involved in killing even those Tamils who came out of their hideouts with white flags with the intention of surrender.”
It may be noted that the UN has sought a detailed report on Fonseka’s disclosure about extra-judicial killings of Tamils.
He further said: “Prior to the beginning of the latest phase of ethnic war about two years ago, Government Agents (GA) in Northern Sri Lanka registered that around 4.5 lakh Tamils were living in those territories, but the figure recorded by the very same officials after the end of war in May this year put it as about three lakhs only. That detail shows that more than 1.5 lakh Tamils were either killed by the Lankan army or simply disappeared.”
On a question about the need for such resolution, Ayyanathan, another organiser of the Movement, said, “Besides registering the country accountable for all these butchering in the name of fighting the terrorists, it would also secure the remaining Tamils now living in camps in the country to live peacefully.”
The movement also said that they would approach all political parties and human rights groups in the state to force the government to come out with a strong resolution declaring the nation involved in genocide.

Seamen seek shore leave extension

CHENNAI: Seafarers asked the State government, on Tuesday, to be more liberal while granting them shore pass/leave to visit their families. According to the rules, seafarers need to get permission from the immigration officer to visit the shore and they have to return to the vessel by 11 pm.
Addressing a seminar on ‘Security and the seafarer’ here, Ishwar Achanta, vice chairman of the Chennai and Ennore Port Steamer Agents Association, said, “Shore passes enabling seafarers to alight from ships to visit their families is a big issue among the seagoing community here and officials must weigh practical issues against the legislations introduced as security cover.”Achanta said the men should not be stopped from visiting their families by citing legal parameters.
Neel Nair, secretary of the Company of Master Mariners of India, (CMMI) Chennai Chapter, said, “While foreign countries never restrict seafarers’ movements on shore while the ship is anchored, the liberty is not granted to even foreign seamen in India.”
Capt Vivekanand, president of Merchant Navy Officers’ Association (MNOA), said , “A few decades ago, seafarers could stay at port for 10 to 12 days, but it has now come down to just 4-5 hours.”“If the vessel reaches the port at night, even those seafarers from Chennai are not allowed to alight, citing rules and security regulations,” he added.
The officials -- B S Yadav, DIG, Coast Guard, Ajay Thayya, Commandant, CISF, Arunachalam, Asst Director, Foreigner Regional Registration Office and P Misra, Principal Officer of the Mercantile Marine Dept, suggested that the issue should be taken up with the shipping ministry.

Chennai Mayor has a date with Terminator

It was a rare meeting of two leaders making an impression in their respective fields in two different hemispheres.
On the sidelines of the All -Mayors Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Chennai Mayor M Subramanian, who is known for his yoga skills, met another specialist and world famous bodybuilder, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, both of them in the Danish capital to call for action on climate change.
According to reports reaching here, both the leaders who met for a short chat at the meeting venue, discussed the climate change issue and shared thoughts about overcoming the century’s biggest problem. Making a mark at the world stage, Chennai Corporation Mayor M Subramanian was bestowed with prominence by the Copenhagen Mayor Ritt Bjerregaard during the All- Mayors Conference which revolved round actions to arrest climate change.
He was also given a prominent position by the host city’s Mayor during the awareness rally of 12 ethanol-powered cars on climate change in the streets of Copenhagen. While Copenhagen’s Mayor was in the first car, Chennai Mayor Subramanian was asked to tour the city in the second car, which indicated the importance of the Chennai Mayor at Copenhagen.
During his stay in the Danish capital, Subramanian toured different places to get hands-on experience on the working system of city’s sewerage system, environment-friendly measures to keep the city green and steps taken by the Copenhagen Mayor to reduce pollution. After the successful meeting at Copenhagen, the Chennai Mayor is expected to return to the city on Saturday.

சிறிலங்க அதிபர் தேர்தல்: ஒரு ஜனநாயக ஏமாற்று!

தங்களை ஆளக் கூடிய அரசை அல்லது அதிபரை தேர்ந்தெடுப்பதற்கு வாக்குரிமை அளிக்கும் ஒரே காரணத்தை மட்டும் வைத்து ஒரு நாட்டில் ஜனநாயகம் நிலவுகிறது என்றோ, அதை ஒரு செயல்படும் ஜனநாயகம் (Functioning Democracy) என்றோ கூறுவது ஜனநாயகம் என்கின்ற உன்னதமான பொது அரசியல் நெறிக்கு எதிரானதாகவே இருக்கும்.

‘மக்களுக்காக, மக்களால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டு, மானுட உரிமை, மாண்புகளின் பாற்பட்டு நின்று, மக்களின் நலனையும் நாட்டின் பாதுகாப்பையும் மேம்படுத்தும் நெறிசார் அரசியலை ஜனநாயகம்’ என்று உலகளாவிய அளவில் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த அடிப்படையை வைத்து மதிப்பீடு செய்தால், இன்றைய உலகில் தங்களை ஜனநாயக நாடு என்றழைத்துக் கொள்ளும் பல நாடுகள் அத்தகுதியை பெறாதிருப்பதை அல்லது இழந்திருப்பதை அறியலாம்.இந்த அடிப்படையில் ஒரு ‘ஜனநாயக நாடு’ என்று கூறுவதற்கு எந்த தகுதியும் இல்லாத ஒரு நாடு என்று சிறிலங்காவை சந்தேகமின்றி சுட்டிக்காட்டலாம்.

1) மக்களால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் இந்த நாட்டில் சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இவர்கள் யாவரும் அந்நாட்டின் பூர்வீகக் குடிகளாக தமிழர்களின் பிரதிநிதிகள். ஆனால் இன்றுவரை அந்த அரசியல் படுகொலைகள் குறித்து எந்த விசாரணையும் நடைபெறவில்லை, எவரும் தண்டிக்கப்படவுமில்லை.

2) இந்த நாடு சுதந்திரம் பெற்று 61 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகியும், அதற்கு ஒரு நாடாளுமன்றம் இருந்தும், அது விடுதலை பெறுவதற்கு முன்பிருந்து இன்றுவரை நிலவும் தனது நாட்டின் ஒரு அங்கமாக வாழ்ந்துவரும் பூர்வீகக் குடிகளான தமிழர் பிரச்சனைக்கு அரசியல் தீ்ர்வு காண அதனால் இயலவில்லை.

3) தனது அரசமைப்புச் சட்டத்தில் தன்னை ஒரு ஜனநாயக சோசலிச குடியரசாக பிரகடணம் செய்துகொண்டு, அதே நேரத்தில் தன்னை ஒரு புத்த மத நாடு என்றும், புத்த மத சாசனத்தை காப்பாற்றி, வளர்ப்பதை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளதாகவும் கூறுகிறது.

4) சிந்தனைச் சுதந்திரம், கருத்துச் சுதந்திரம், விரும்பிய மதத்தை கடைபிடிக்கும் சுதந்திரம் என்று எல்லாம் உறுதியளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால், 2004ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் இதுநாள்வரை 18 ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர். வெள்ளை வேன்களால் 34 ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் கடத்திச் செல்லப்பட்டு காணடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். அரசின் ஒடுக்குமுறைக்கு அஞ்சி, 20க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பத்திரிக்கையாளர்கள் அயல் நாடுகளில் தஞ்சமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

தனது நாட்டு மக்களின் மீதே போர் தொடுத்து, அதன் காரணமாக சொந்த மண்ணிலேயே அகதிகளாக முகாம்களில் அடைக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு உணவு, தண்ணீர் வழங்காமல், அதையே போர் ஆயுதமாகப் பயன்படுத்துகிறது என்று ஆதாரத்துடன் எழுதிய ஒரு பத்திரிக்கையாளர் பயங்கரவாதிகளுடன் தொடர்பு உள்ளவர் என்று கூறி, வழக்குத் தொடர்ந்து தண்டித்து, 20 ஆண்டுக்கால சிறைத் தண்டனை விதித்துள்ளது.

நீ நடத்தும் போரும், உனது ஊழல் ஆட்சியும், கட்டவிழ்த்துள்ள அடக்குமுறையும் கொடுமையானது என்று நேரடியாக குற்றம் சாற்றி எழுதிய ஒரு பத்திரிக்கை ஆசிரியர் பட்டப்பகலில் நாட்டின் தலைநகரிலேயே படுகொலை செய்யப்படுகிறார்.

5) அரை நூற்றாண்டுக் காலம் எந்த பிரச்சனைக்குத் தீர்வு காண முடியவில்லையோ அதற்கு தீர்வு காண, நாட்டில் அமைதி காண எந்த இயக்கத்தோடு பேசியதோ அந்த அரசியல் – போராட்ட இயக்கத்தை பயங்கரவாத இயக்கம் என்று சித்தரித்து அவர்களை அழிக்கிறோம் என்று கூறி, தனது நாட்டு மக்களின் மீதே முப்படைகளையும் ஏவி, பாஸ்பரஸ் குண்டுகள், வெப்பக் குண்டுகள் என்று பேரழிவு ஏற்படுத்தும் ஆயுதங்களைக் வீசித் தாக்கியழித்து, அவர்களை அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்த மண்ணிலேயே அனாதைகளாக்கிய, அதற்குப் பின்னும் பிரச்சனைக்குத் தீர்வு காண வழியின்றித் தத்தளிக்கும் ஒரு நாடு.

6) “இராணுவ நடவடிக்கையின் மூலம் சிறுபான்மையினரின் பிரச்சனைக்கு நிரந்தரத் தீர்வு காணும் வழி பிறந்துள்ளது” என்று கூறி, இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகளில் ஒன்றரை இலட்சம் மக்களை அழித்து, மற்றவர்களை அனாதையாக்கிய பின்னர், எந்த இராணுவ ஆயுதத்தைக் கொண்டு இன அழிப்பைச் செய்ததோ, அந்தப் படையின் தளபதியை இன்று அரசியல் எதிரியாக சம்பாதித்துக் கொண்டு திணறிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு இனவாத அரசியல் புதைகுழியில் சிக்கியப் பின்னர், இன்று அந்த புதைச் சேற்றிலிருந்து ‘வெற்றிகரமாக’ வெளியேறி மீண்டும் பதவியைப் பிடிக்க, இனப் படுகொலைக்கு ஆளான மக்களின் ஆதரவைப் பெற போராடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு அரசியல்வாதியை அரச தலைவராகப் பெற்றிருக்கும் இந்த நாட்டை உலக நாடுகளும், மக்கள் குடியரசு என்றும், மிகப் பெரிய ஜனநாயக நாடு என்றும் தங்களை அழைத்துக் கொள்ளும் தெற்காசிய வல்லான்மைகளும் சிறிலங்காவை ஜனநாயக நாடு என்று கூறுகின்றன, அதற்கு உதவுகின்றன, அதன் தேர்தலில் மறைமுகப் பங்காற்றுகின்றன.

இந்த நாட்டைத்தான் ஒரு ‘செயல்படும் ஜனநாயகம்’ – அது பெரும்பான்மை சிங்கள மக்களின் வாக்குகளால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டது என்பதை அறிந்திருந்தும் – உலக நாடுகளும் அங்கீகரித்துள்ளன!

ஆள்வதும் இனவெறி, அரசியலும் இனவெறி!

இப்படிப்பட்ட நாட்டில் நடைபெறவுள்ள அதிபர் தேர்தலில் தமிழர்கள் பங்கேற்க வேண்டும் என்று சிங்கள பெளத்த பேரினவாதத்தை தங்களின் அரசியல் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு அதிகாரத்தைக் கைப்பற்ற முயலும் தலைவர்கள் பேசுகின்றனர்.

தேர்தல் அளிக்கும் ‘ஜனநாயக வாய்ப்பை’ இழந்துவிடும் தவறை மீண்டும் செய்துவிடக் கூடாது என்று இனப் படுகொலைக்கு ஆளாகி, தங்கள் உடன் சொந்தங்களை இழந்து திக்கற்று நிற்கும் மக்களின் சில தலைவர்களும் போதிக்கின்றனர்! யார் இவர்களின் ஜனநாயக மூளையை இயக்குகிறார்கள் என்பதும் இரகசியமல்ல.

ஜனநாயகம் என்பது தங்களின் வாழ்வுரிமை அனைத்தும் கண்ணியமான வழிகளில் உறுதிசெய்யப்பட்ட ஒரு அரசியல் அமைப்பில் வாழும் மக்களுக்கு உரியதே தவிர, அது அரச பயங்கரவாதத்தால் அழுத்தப்பட்டு, செத்துப் பிழைக்கும் வாழ்வை கால் நூற்றாண்டுக் காலத்திற்கும் அதிகமாக அனுபவித்துவரும் ஒரு இனத்திற்கு உரியதல்ல.

தங்களின் தாயகம் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படவில்லை, மொழிக்கு சம உரிமையில்லை, சமய அடையாளங்கள் அழிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன, வாழ்ந்த இடம் அரசு துணையுடன் கபளீகரம் செய்யப்படுகிறது. பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளாக நிலைத்து வாழ்ந்த இடத்தில் இருந்த சொந்தங்கள், உயிரைக் கையில் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு நாட்டை விட்டு படகுகளில் தப்பி, உலகமெங்கிலும் அகதியாய் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. இந்த மக்களுக்கா தேர்தல்?

இதுநாள்வரை அதிபர் தேர்தல்களிலும், அந்நாட்டு நாடாளுமன்ற அவைகளுக்கும் நடந்த தேர்தலில் வாக்களித்தும், உறுப்பினர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தும் தமிழர்கள் கண்டதென்ன? தேர்தல் ஜனநாயகத்தில் வாழ்வுரிமையும், அரசியல் உரிமைகளும் சாத்தியப்படும் என்று உணர்ந்திருந்தால் தந்தை செல்வா வட்டுக்கோட்டை தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றியிருப்பாரா?

தமிழர்களை அவர்களின் அனுபவமும், வரலாறும் வழி நடத்த அரசியல் தலைவர்கள் வழிவகுக்க வேண்டும். இல்லாத ஜனநாயகத்தின் பேரால் அவர்கள் மீதான அடிமைத்தளையை இறுக்க உதவக் கூடாது.

தமிழர்கள் வாக்கு ஏன் தேவை?

இரண்டு காரணங்களுக்காக சிங்கள அரசியல் தலைமைகளுக்கு தமிழர்களின் வாக்கும் ஆதரவும் தேவைப்படுகிறது.

1) இனப் படுகொலைக்கு ஆளாக்கப்பட்ட ஈழத் தமிழர்கள் இந்தத் தேர்தலில் பங்கேற்று வாக்களிப்பதன் மூலம் இப்போதுள்ள சிறிலங்க அரசமைப்பை அவர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்கள் என்பது உறுதியாகும். தமிழர்கள் தேர்தலில் பங்கேற்றுள்ளார்கள், எனவே ‘பிரிவினை’யை அவர்கள் ஆதரிக்கவில்லை என்று கூறுவதற்கும், சிறிலங்காவின் இறையாண்மையை அவர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்கள் என்றும் கூறுவதற்கு வழிவகுக்கும்.

2) இத்தேர்தலில் தமிழர்கள் பங்கேற்று, தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்படும் அதிபர் எவராயினும், அவர் தமிழ் மக்களையும் உள்ளடக்கிய சிறிலங்க அரசின் தலைவராக அங்கீகாரம் பெறுவார். அதன் மூலம் தமிழர் பிரச்சனைக்கு ஒரு தீர்வை உருவாக்கி அதனை – இந்தியா,சீனா போன்ற தெற்காசிய வல்லரசுகளின் ஆதரவுடன் – தமிழர்களின் மீது திணித்துவிடலாம். அதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவிக்கும் எவரையும் தேசப் பாதுகாப்பின் பேரிலும், பயங்கரவாதிகள் என்று முத்திரையிட்டு்ம் சிறையில் அடைத்துவிடலாம்.

இவ்விரு காரணங்களினால்தான், தமிழர் தேசியக் கூட்டணியை வளைத்துப் போட இரு சிங்கள அரசியல் தலைமைகளும் தலைகீழாக நின்று முயற்சிக்கின்றன. தமிழர்கள் பிரச்சனைக்கு அரசியல் தீர்வு என்று கூறி எதை முன்மொழிந்தாலும் அதற்கு தமிழர் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பின் ஆதரவு இருந்தால்தான் அது சர்வதேச அளவில் செல்லுபடியாகும் என்பது இந்தியாவிற்குத் தெரியும், அதனால்தான் த.தே.கூ. தலைவர்களின் மீது அழுத்தத்தைப் பிரயோகம் செய்கிறது.

ஈழத் தமிழர்கள் இதையெல்லாம் சீர்தூக்கிப் பார்த்து, சிறிலங்க அதிபர் தேர்தலை புறக்கணிக்க வேண்டும். எந்த அடிப்படையைக் கூறி புறக்கணிப்பது என்ற கேள்வி எழுமானால், தங்களின் இறையாண்மையை நிலைநிறுத்தும் வட்டுக்கோட்டைத் தீர்மானத்தின் மீது தமிழர்களிடையே ஐ.நா. முன்னின்று பொது வாக்கெடுப்பு நடத்தட்டும். அதில் பங்கேற்று, தாங்கள் சிறிலங்காவுடன் இணைந்து வாழ விரும்புகிறோமா அல்லது வட்டுக்கோட்டைத் தீர்மானத்தின்படி தனியே பிரிந்துசென்று தமிழீழ தனியரசாக வாழ வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறோமா என்பதை சர்வதேசம் தீர்மானிக்கட்டும் என்று கூற வேண்டும்.

தமிழர்கள் புலம் பெயர்ந்து பல நாடுகளில் வாழ்ந்தாலும், தங்களின் அரசியல் விடுதலையை உறுதி செய்யும் வட்டுக்கோட்டை தீர்மானத்தின் மீது வாக்களித்து ஒருமித்த எண்ணத்தை உலக நாடுகளிடையே ஏற்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வேளையில், அதனை வீழ்த்தும் விதமாக, சிறிலங்க அதிபர் தேர்தலில் பங்கேற்பது தமிழரின் அரசியல் விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்திற்குப் புதைகுழியாகும் என்பதை உணர வேண்டும்.

SL Military says Prabakaran’s daughter’s body not found

The military says it had not found the body of LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabakaran's daughter and so could not confirm the veracity of images circulating on some websites of a dead female body with gunshot wounds supposedly found in the north claiming to be that of Dwaraka, the Tiger leader’s daughter.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online Military spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that the military had never found bodies of Prabhakaran’s family members except for his son Charles Anthony.

“We did not identify Dwaraka’s body amongst the un-identified female bodies in May and have still not found a body similar to those the pictures circulating in the internet,” Brig. Nanayakkara said. According to him there were female bodies that were found on May 19th but none of them fitted the profile of Dwaraka.

The picture on the internet claiming to be that of Dwaraka shows her in her undergarments lying dead on the bare ground. Another picture of her taken when she was alive in a red shalwar kameez shows close resemblance although it is not confirmed that it is the same person in both of these pictures.
