OCEAN NAVIGATOR WEB-EXCLUSIVE: Bluetooth on board

Image
Source: http://www.oceannavigator.com/Web-Exclusives-2013/Bluetooth-on-board/ BY FREDRICK GARY HARELAND Recently I purchased my first iPad and joined the mobile wireless tablet revolution. Now I wonder how I got along all those years without one of these marvels of modern technology and my wife is wondering why she chided me to get one (she thinks I spend way too much time online!). It truly is a marvelous tool and comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which makes it perfect for getting online in port and for onboard vessel automation, smart energy, entertainment, remote access and control of radar, sonar, depth sounder, and chartplotters. To begin with lets talk a bit about what exactly Bluetooth is and then give an excellent example of how it can be implemented onboard your boat to make life a little easier. Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances and was created by telecom vendor Ericsson back in 1994. It basically operates in...

According to official sources, Union Shipping Minister G. K.Vasan  is expected to make the big announcement, which could create a  level-playing field for both major and non-major ports in the  country, on July 31 in Mumbai . It may be noted here that the Shipping Ministry, for the past few  months, has been contemplating to come up with new set of  tariff guidelines in response to many feed-backs received from  the stakeholders that t he existing Tariff Authority for Major  Ports (TAMP)s regulations are detrimental to the growth of the  sector. Besides, Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Draft Port Regulatory  Authority Bill also suggested that th...

Source: http://www.sagarsandesh.com/news/chennai-port-plans-cfs-at-thiruvottiyur-to-ease-congestion-in-future/ If the efforts of Chennai Port management in setting up a Container  Freight Station (CFS) for “Seal Verification” of export containers at  Thiruvottiyur Parking Yard , located within a few km distance from the  port’s main entry point, materialize as anticipated it would  drastically reduce traffic congestion that sullied the port’s  reputation among the trade. According to sources in Shipping Ministry, the Inter Ministerial  Committee (IMC) for consideration of proposals for setting up of  ICDs/CFSs , said to be the top body for such infrastructure projects,  has approved the Chennai Port’s CFS project subject to concurrence of  Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC ). Speaking to Sagar Sandesh, a senior official from the Ministry, said:  “Getting clearance from the IMC is a first major step towards setting  up...

Delayed Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway: TN EXIM traders, Chennai Port hit

Image
Published in Sagar Sandesh Maritime Weekly  - Killing the geese laying golden eggs Though 15 months have passed by now , ever since the Tamil Nadu State Government stopped the 19-km long Chennai Port - Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway along the banks of the River Cooum citing a ridiculous reason of slight deviation from the approved alignment, there is no sign of restarting the important infrastructure project anytime soon. The inordinate delay in completing the all important road connectivity project, which was primarily conceived as a permanent solution to growing congestion of heavy vehicles plying between Chennai Port and the outskirts of the City via Chennai’s arterial roads , is silently eating into the already fragile EXIM trade growth of the region. As a cascading effect of the halted projec t, exporters and importers of the State, who naturally preferred the Chennai Port for their needs for the last several decades, have started to slowly move their oper...

Multi-benefit Sethusamudram getting submerged in politics & religion

Image
Source: http://www.sagarsandesh.com/news/originally-proposed-in-1860/ -Originally proposed in 1860 Though the Government of India designed and launched the  Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) in 2005 in Palk  Strait to give a new and shorter route to vessels from the West  Coast to East Coast ports, the multi-crore project is yet to see  the light of the day. While both voices – in support of the project and its blunt  opposition – have been heard all over these years, the support  voice reverberated across the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu  last week when the DMK Party held protests demanding the State  Government to withdraw its submission to the Supreme Court  opposing the channel and pleaded for early implementation of the  project. The State-wide agitation in support of the project by DMK was  organised after the Tamil Nadu Government informed the Supreme  Court (a few weeks ago) that the Sethusamud...
