Police round up blind persons near CM’s house

Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai, on June 13, 2010:

CHENNAI: The Royepettah police on Saturday rounded up more than 25 students of the Government School for Visually Challenged at Poonamallee, who were in the city to meet the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to air their grievances directly, before they could reach the Chief Minister’s Gopalapuram residence.

Since the school authorities announced unscheduled holidays for the school just to douse down their agitation for removal of headmaster (in charge) David Wilson, a group of 25 students planned to meet the Chief Minister to apprise him of the ground situation.

Around 1.30 pm when they were nearing the Chief Minister’s residence, local police rounded them up and brought them to the Royepettah police station for questioning.

According to the students, they were kept at the police station for almost five hours and by 6.30 pm, a police van left them at the Marina Beach and ensured that all of them boarded Poonamalle-bound buses.

Speaking to Express, one of the students said, “We were here to meet the Chief Minister and wanted him to understand the problems faced by us at Poonamalle school, but failed to meet him as he was busy on a function, we were told.”

The visually challenged students also vowed not to attend classes till the headmaster (in charge), David Wilson, was removed from the post.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that some of the associations working for the visually challenged have planned to take up the issue in a big manner in coming days.

Parvathi Ammal says no to medical treatment in State

By G Saravanan

Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai, on June 13, 2010:

CHENNAI: A day after the Indian government relaxed its conditions imposed on slain LTTE leader V Prabakaran’s mother Parvathi Ammal to receive her treatment in Tamil Nadu, her counsel and former Jaffna MP K Shivajilingam on Saturday categorically said that she is in no mood to consider it owing to personal problems.

Speaking to Express over phone from Jaffna, the former MP and a close relative of Parvathi Ammal, said, “Due to her tedious journey on stretcher and bitter experience of deportation from Chennai airport in mid-April this year, Parvathi Ammal is very much unlikely to consider the latest offer by the Indian government to get treated in Tamil Nadu by staying at her daughter’s house.” Her faith in the country’s hospitality towards an elderly woman who mostly remain on a stretcher for a whole day dashed after the Indian government imposed rigid conditions to get treatment for her illness, and this has wounded her mind very badly, Shivajilingam said.

On April 16, when the ailing Parvathi Ammal (along with a maid) landed at Chennai airport with a valid Indian visa, she was immediately deported without being allowed out of the aircraft by which she reached here from Kuala Lumpur. Since her airport-deportation has become a big issue in the state, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced that if she contacts the state government in a proper manner, he would take up her case. After the state’s announcement to allow Parvathi Ammal for treatment, she, from Kuala Lumpur hospital sent a mail addressing MK urging the Chief Minister to make arrangements for her travel from Kuala Lumpur to Tiruchy, as Dr Rajendran of Musiri has made arrangements for her treatment in Tiruchy.

Based on her plea, MK took up her case and finally by May 10, Indian government (in a letter dated May 7) gave its nod to allow Parvathi Ammal to Tamil Nadu to receive her treatment but with severe conditions.

But to a surprise to everyone in the state, Parvathi Ammal along with MP Shivajilingam on May 11 landed in Colombo from Kuala Lumpur. Since then, she has been receiving treatment for her illness in a hospital located at Valvettithurai (VVT), her native place in Island nation.
On her health status, Shivajilingam said, “Though she is not fully recuperated, Parvathi Ammal started recognising people and her daughter from Canada regularly contacts her for health updates.”

POONAMALLEE: Visually challenged students on hunger strike

By G Saravanan
Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai, on June 12, 2010:

CHENNAI: Over 70 students of the Poonamallee Government School for the Visually Challenged on Friday began an indefinite hunger strike on the school premises seeking immediate removal of head master in-charge David Wilson for alleged mismanagement and harassment.
Striking students told Express that their headmaster, who was given a temporary charge of the school about a year ago and working there for the past 20 years, had ruined the school and its infrastructure without utilising the government funds in a proper manner.
Stating that their agitation was not against the government, one of the students said, “Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who holds the differently-abled welfare department, is doling out several funds for the development of the visually challenged, but headmasters like David Wilson and officials at the Commissionerate for the Differently Abled are not utilising it properly and have made our life difficult here.”
The students alleged that the headmaster, who reportedly runs a matriculation school at Tambaram, had failed to give importance to visually challenged students at Poonamallee school.
More than 150 students are studying in the school and staying in a hostel on the premises.
To pacify the agitating students, Commissioner for the Differently Abled, C Vijayaraj Kumar, asked Assistant Director (Special Schools) Suganthy to go to the spot.
According to the students, she used abusive language when they refused to withdraw the agitation.
In a late evening development to suppress their agitation, all the students studying in classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 were ‘asked’ to vacate their hostels by Saturday morning.
Attempts to contact headmaster David Wilson for his comments over the allegations turned futile as he remained unreachable throughout the day.
When contacted, Commissioner Vijayaraj Kumar said, “We are trying to sort it out. Students should not indulge in such activities pressing their demands.” He also said the Commissionerate for the Welfare of theDifferently -abled did not receive any letter detailing the students’ demand.

TAMIL NADU: Child labour remains a pressing issue

By G Saravanan

Published in The New Indian Express on June 12, 2010:

CHENNAI: Despite the State government’s sustained efforts and the involvement of the United States in a child labour eradication project, child labour remains a pressing issue in many districts.
In fact, it has increased substantially in Virudhunagar and Sivakasi, says Agni Subramaniam, executive director of the human rights organisation Manitham, which had recently conducted an extensive study in both the districts.
Subramaniam explained, “In 2007, we had done a study and documented several child labourers who were robbed of their education in these districts. In the May 2010 survey, we found the same children working in hazardous cracker industries, indication enough that the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) has not achieved anything over the years.”
Manitham’s survey revealed that about two lakh child labourers were engaged (both directly and indirectly) in hazardous cracker industries and about 70 per cent of workers engaged in the matchbox industry were child labourers.
“Manitham found in August 2007 that a large number of children were employed in fireworks — cracker factories and match factories. The recent survey reveals that there has been a huge jump in the numbers,” Subramaniam told Express.
To eradicate child labour, the Centre, with the support of the US, had started a five-year project — the Indo-US (INDUS) Child Labour Project — in 2004. Later, the project was taken over by the National Child Labour Project (NCLP).
Till March 2009, while the INDUS project was on, there were 44 schools offering classes up till standard VIII in Virudhunagar district. However, after the completion of the project’s contract period, the number of schools dropped to 39 and classes down to standard V. Besides, during the term of the project, there were 120 teachers employed at these schools for rescued children. That figure has gone down to less than 100.
Locals fear that the number of schools may further dwindle during the current academic year, Subramaniam revealed.
Manitham also found that teachers, who were not paid their salary for a year, received three months’ wages recently and that too after the survey was held.
Interestingly, during the INDUS project, every student who was attending these schools was paid
Rs 100 each month, an incentive to parents and to encourage the children to attend school regularly. But for the last 12 months, the NCLP has not paid students, which has again forced many children to seek jobs to help their families.
Manitham’s survey also revealed that although there were more than 1,500 students in 44 schools meant for rescued children during the INDUS project, due to non-payment of the incentive to students the rate of attendance had declined to below 1,000.

Islanders demand Berthing of mainland bound ships at Mayabunder Jetty

Source: http://www.andamansheekha.com/

Port Blair, June 09: It is apparent that development and progress of North and Middle Andaman, in comparison to South Andaman, is unsatisfactory and the reason is nothing but lack of Administrative attention and utilization of the resources and infrastructures of the area.
In spite of having larger territory and more population, North and Middle Andaman is struggling to come up but the underprivileged area is failing. The area is more prosperous in agriculture, dairy, fishery, poultry and other sectors due to its fertile soil and hardworking people.
It is very unfortunate for the people of the area that they do not get satisfactory value of their products and labor and on the contrary they have to pay more for the products imported from mainland and outside off the area.

They have to pay extra amount for any articles than the people of South Andaman, especially Port Blair as they have to pay the extra transportation charge from Port Blair. Neither they can get the imported products easily and reasonably nor can they get suitable value to their own products only because of the poor transportation facility.
There is a wharf at Mayabunder in which mainland bound ship used to embark but the system has changed, at present hardly any ship touches Mayabunder and the wharf is laying almost unused. Instead of having a good wharf, mainland bound ships do not embark there hampering the total economy of the region.

The commerce and trade of the area is in extinction edge affecting the standard of living and economy of common people of the area. The businesspersons have to import or export produces and goods to and from mainland via Port Blair paying extra amount for both transportation and port tax which is the normal reason for the increase of rate of the products adding extra local taxes.
It is not only a matter of price hike but it is very disheartening and discouraging for the traders and businesspersons as trading became tiresome and hectic in the region due to complicated transportation of the goods and articles from mainland via Port Blair.

The businesspersons need to take pain to store their goods and articles at Port Blair which is both expensive and troublesome; they need to hire or purchase vehicles to transport the goods from Port Blair to their place; and they have to face so many other extra and unwanted problems which are discouraging for them.
It is a well known fact that transport and communication system is compulsory for the progress and development of any area and at the same time it is not digestible and comprehensible why the Administration is so indifferent to the prosperity of North and Middle Andaman region.

The administration must think of berthing of Mainland Bound ship at Mayabunder harbour atleast twice in a month for the sake of economic development of North and Middle Andaman and convenience of people living in that region.
