Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai on August 30, 2011: Source: http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/Media-played-Opposition-role-Mayor/308910.html CHENNAI: Hailing the media, both electronic and print, Mayor M Subramanian on Monday said it played the role of the opposition party for the DMK-led Chennai Corporation Council for the last five years . Addressing the councillors during the monthly council meet at Ripon Building here, Subramanian said, “ When the DMK council took over the Chennai Corporation and mayor post about five years ago, reporters had questioned how the DMK-majority House would function democratically when the council does not have a real opposition like the AIADMK to criticise the policies.”   “My reply to them then was though we have opposition parties such as the Congress, PMK, CPI and CPM in the House, we see the media as the real opposition party that would make us tread the right path for better administration,” Subramanian recalled. It was rig...

Worked with Mayor for development: Congress

By G Saravanan Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai on August 30, 2011: Source: http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/Worked-with-Mayor-for-development-Congress/308911.html CHENNAI: Congress, which fought the Chennai Corporation Council elections unitedly with the DMK in October 2006 and wrested the position of the main opposition party in the absence of AIADMK members, claims to have played a very constructive role during the last five years. “ We played the role of a constructive opposition at the Council meetings and whenever we got the chance to advice the DMK-led Council on policies and schemes, we did it for the sake of public as a true opposition ,” Saidai P Ravi, Opposition Leader in the House, told Express. When asked to comment on the DMK’s five-year rule, Ravi said, “Barring a few unfinished jobs, Mayor M Subramanian and his Council performed well on various schemes that brought relief to Chennaiites.” Though DMK was an ally, Congress fought for the improvement of i...

CHENNAI CORPORATION: CPM councillor proves her mettle

Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai on August 30, 2011: Source:  http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/CPM-councillor-proves-her-mettle/308912.html CHENNAI: Though several Councillors have spoken at the Chennai Corporation’s Council meets in the past five years, it was the voice of Devi, the lone CPM Councillor from Ward-59, that stood out as she raised several public issues and got redressed. Braving all odds, Devi has managed to cut a mark at the meetings by highlighting grievances of the public and forced the DMK-led Council to take corrective measures. While evaluating the performance of the DMK-led Council vis-a-vis the improvement of civic infrastructure in the city, Devi said that the Council lacked follow up mechanism that has ultimately resulted in discontinuation of several important public welfare schemes over the years. “We should congratulate Mayor M Subramanian for his efforts to add more green lung spots by setting up new parks on lands reclaimed from en...

By G Saravanan Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai on August 29, 2011: Source: http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/Fruitful-five-years-in-office-says-Subramanian/308570.html CHENNAI: Monday’s Council meeting at the historic Ripon Building would be the current DMK-led Chennai Corporation Council’s last before the local body election in October. Barring a one-month break due to Madras High Court’s negative observation on the events while conducting local body elections in October 2006, Mayor M Subramanian, who comes from a humble background, would be completing his five-year stint as the Mayor of the oldest Municipal Corporation in the Commonwealth Nations outside the United Kingdom. “ Besides a few shortcomings, we are signing off after a fruitful five years of service to Chennaiites and we are happy that we have transformed the city on several fronts in the past five years, ” was Subramanian’s response when asked about his stint as the head of the city. “ It was never an e...

CHENNAI CORPORATION: Mixed bag for Mayor at fag end of tenure

Published in The New Indian Express, Chennai on August 29, 2011: Source: http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/mixed-bag-for-mayor-at-fag-end-of-tenure/308572.html CHENNAI: There were highs, there were lows. In the past five years, there were several achievements the DMK-led Corporation Council could perhaps take pride in, but then there were many incidents that it hopes history will forget. In the local body elections in October 2006, the DMK-led front romped home handsomely and the sitting Mayor M Subramanian, was elected the head for the city. However, the ruling party drew flak from the court over poll-related violence and alleged rigging. The DMK salvaged some pride directing the 99 councillors and the Mayor to resign from their posts and face re-election. At the re-poll held in February 2007, which the Opposition AIADMK boycotted, the DMK members were re-elected without a contest. Even though the Chennai Corporation did not have a real opposition party inside the House, monthly...

Echoing Suresh’s view, G Kurinji, member of the city-based Forum Against War Crimes and Genocide and vice-president of PUCL, said, “ If the State government takes a decision to effect the commutation, they could do the same with a resolution in the Council of Ministers and it needs to be sent or communicated to the Governor for action.” Speaking to Express on his organisation’s clemency petition to the Governor and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on behalf of Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan, Suresh said that repe...

Don't hang them: THE HINDU EDITORIAL ON HANGING OF THREE TAMILS

Source:  http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/article2400725.ece Preparations have begun at the Vellore Central Prison for hanging Murugan, Santhan, and Perarivalan — convicted for their involvement in the 1991 assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
